Kitchen Witchery: Making Immune Boosting Fire Cider Tonic

Fire Cider is a tonic made with Apple Cider Vinegar and various roots, herbs and spices. It’s used in Herbology as a digestive aid but at this time of the year as the day’s get shorter and colder, I like to keep it handy for it’s potent immune boosting properties.

I spent an hour in the kitchen this afternoon mixing up 2 large jars of Fire Cider. It will sit in the pantry for about a month and be ready to use when flu season really kicks in. We’ll take 1/2 to 1 Tablespoon a day to keep us healthy throughout the Winter and if a cold should settle in, this tonic is an amazing chest cold and cough remedy because of it’s powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

Fire Cider is easy to make and so worth having in your cupboard, so join me in the kitchen because I’m going to teach you how I make my Fire Cider.

You Will Need: (I made 2 jars so I used double the recipe below)

1 wide mouth Mason Jar (A quart size)

2 cups Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother)

1/2 an Onion roughly chopped

5-6 Garlic Cloves crushed

1/2 cup of chopped fresh Horse Raddish

1/2 cup of chopped fresh Ginger

1/2 thumb size chopped fresh Tumeric

1/2 a Lemon sliced (peel on)

1/2 an Orange sliced (peel on)

4 sprigs of fresh Thyme

1 large Bay Leaf (preferably fresh)

1/2 a cup of Raw Organic Honey

2 Cinnamon sticks

1/4 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper ( you can adjust the cayenne when the Fire Cider is ready in a months time. It should taste pungent, sweet but spicy) I will most like add more later.

Start by adding the Raw Honey to your jar. You can warm the Apple Cider Vinegar slightly to help release all the juices and oils from the ingredients. Now add all of your dry ingredients to you jar. Don’t pack it too tight as you will want space to fill the jar with the Vinegar.

Once you have all your ingredients in your jar (s), top it up with Vinegar.

Add the lid to the jar and give it a good shake. Some Herbalists like to keep their Fire Cider sat on a warm sunny window sill until it’s ready. I’m keeping mine in the pantry.

Remember to give it a good shake every few days. Once the Cider is ready, adjust the Cayenne Pepper for more heat if needed. You can also add more Honey if you feel it needs to be sweetened. Fire Cider will keep for months in a dark pantry like mine but if you prefer, you can keep it in the fridge.
