We took a long sunny walk Friday; May long weekend and people were out enjoying the weather. Boaters and kayakers on the water, a beach volleyball game at Concord Park and picnic blankets on the grass at Science World. Long weekends usually mean empty streets and a city void of people but with Covid restrictions in place, everyone’s stay-cationing.
We watched a great film this week called Fantastic Fungi; “A film about the magical, mysterious and medicinal world of fungi and their power to heal, sustain and contribute to the regeneration of life on Earth.” I’ll leave you the free link here if you’d like to watch it. We love watching documentaries at home and especially how they invite deep conversations afterward.
I put a Charcuterie board together for dinner Saturday. We set up on the sunny patio and watched my sister’s Flamenco show streaming live from a theatre here in the city. She is a professional Flamenco singer and dancer trained in Spain. I love when the weather warms and we can eat dinner al fresco. Flamenco, cocktails and lot’s of duende. I made Bruschetta to go with our Charcuterie. My recipe below.
Recipe for Bruschetta
About 1 lb. cherry tomatoes
About 16 fresh basil leaves, torn into small pieces (I picked basil from my garden)
8 slices coarse bread, each about 1/2 inch thick – I bought a green olive loaf
2 cloves garlic
1/4 cup of extra-virgin olive oil
Preheat the broiler.
slice the tomatoes into 1/4 or 1/2
In a bowl, combine the tomatoes, basil, and salt (to taste) and set aside
Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and broil, turning once, until crisp and golden on both sides, about 3 minutes.
Immediately rub one side of each bread slice vigorously with a garlic cloves.
Arrange the bread slices, garlic side up, on a platter. Spoon the tomato mixture onto the toasted bread and drizzle with the oil. Serves 4.
My patio garden is a haven above the busy city. I ordered string lights and placed them around the pots. When the sun sets I turn them on and the magical glow creates a serenity that both the cats and we love to be in. I’ve been meditating out there too, especially in this little corner where my Blueberry bush, mint, basil, lavender and geraniums are growing. I love cozy corners.
This morning fared cool and overcast. I took a walk to Spruce Harbour Marina. I’ve always found marinas enchanting. I would love to have a boat large enough to take long trips up and down this beautiful coast. I’m drawn to life on the ocean perhaps because of my astrological sign in Cancer; boats, light houses, fishing docks, fog. If I need a break, a walk along the ocean always helps; The salty air, Crows hunting for mussels on the rocky shore and the algae scent at low tide stir my spirit to adventure. Some places on my list to sail would be Haida Gwaii, The Inside passage and around Vancouver Island. There are so many villages and coves to explore.
I feel as though I’ve been away on holiday this weekend. Moving slowly and not filling my to-do list certainly made for a very relaxing few days. I hope you’ve all enjoyed this May long weekend.
